“Developing genomics tools in Cucurbitaceae, including the sequencing of the melon genome, and their applications to improve these crops.” The principal objective of this research project is to develop genomics tools in melon for identifying characters and agronomic traits of interest.
Spain is the world’s fifth largest producer of melon; approximately one third of the annual production is exported turning Spain into the world’s largest exporter.
During the last couple of years, the growing of hybridized species in Spain has allowed for the end-production to be maintained, although the cultivated area has decreased. The development of the research in melon genomics will allow for a greater knowledge of the species that will lead to the improvement of the varieties’ different traits of agronomic interest such as the fruit’s quality. All of this will contribute to improving the Spanish market’s position on the global market.
